Sahara Relief and its Vision
SaharaRelief will work in partnership with African communities to improve access to quality maternal and child healthcare. Our goal is to provide healthcare in accordance with the Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978, which identifies primary healthcare as the key to achieving "Health for All". Under the Declaration, primary healthcare includes the following:
  • education concerning prevailing health problems and the methods of preventing and controlling them;
  • an adequate supply of safe water and basic sanitation;
  • maternal and child health care, including family planning;
  • immunization against the major infectious diseases; prevention and control of locally endemic diseases;
  • appropriate treatment of common diseases and injuries; and
  • provision of essential drugs/medications.
Additional goals will include better treatment and prevention of childhood diseases by utilizing the World Health Organization (WHO) approach to the integrated management of childhood illnesses, which covers acute respiratory illnesses, malaria, measles, and malnutrition. We aim to ensure that children are fully immunized and given prophylactic vitamin A and that their mothers receive counseling on feeding.
